The yachting industry is changing, and with it come new expectations for today’s yacht captains and officers.
For professionals looking to build a long-term career at sea, the key is understanding how individual qualifications fit into a broader career path and how experience gained in yachting can develop into internationally recognized qualifications.
Captain’s Seminar at the CROYA Yacht Show
At this year’s CROYA Yacht Show, we hosted a Captain’s Seminar focused on the opportunities and requirements associated with Unlimited Area Certification, offering a practical look at what candidates go through – from entry requirements and examinations to progression towards higher-level qualifications.
Building on successful generations of candidates and recognition of its professional standards by foreign maritime administrations, Adria Libar continues to present international qualification pathways to a new generation of yachting professionals.
From Certification to Career Development
For many yachting professionals, moving from the private yacht sector towards commercial operations can represent both an opportunity and a challenge. Understanding the next steps requires a clear overview of:
- Qualification and eligibility requirements
- Sea service requirements
- STCW training
- Progression towards officer qualifications
- Examination and assessment procedures
Croatia as a Starting Point, International Pathways as the Next Step
Croatia has a strong maritime tradition and a growing yachting sector, with professionals building careers both in the Adriatic and internationally. While Croatia remains an important starting point for professional education and training, international pathways can offer further opportunities for career development.
This approach underpins Adria Libar’s cooperation with foreign partners, including Belgium and Malta.
One pathway under discussion is Officer of the Watch 3000 GT, in cooperation with the Maltese training centre Maritime MT. The discussions include the possibility of additional benefits for candidates who complete their STCW training at Adria Libar and continue their education at Maritime MT. Potential benefits could include preferential programme fees, vouchers or other measures to help reduce the overall cost of further training.
The cooperation is also intended to work in both directions: Adria Libar provides STCW training and career guidance to candidates in Croatia and the wider Adriatic region, while Maritime MT would refer candidates to Adria Libar when they require STCW training.
Continuing the Conversation About Career Development
The seminar at CROYA Yacht Show provided an opportunity to explore how qualifications, practical experience and education can work together to support a clear career pathway.
Through our training modules, and developing international cooperation, we continue to support yacht professionals. The seminar was delivered by Captain Albert Gregl, and we were pleased with the strong interest from captains throughout the CROYA Yacht Show.
